| Eddie Izzard |

Went to see Eddie Izzard live for the third time last night.
I saw him for the first time in 1993 at the Ambassadors, London. This was his first tour, before anyone knew who he was. I can't take credit for hearing about him -- that lies with Sean whose birthday trip it was. Hilarious.
In 1996 I saw him in Definite Article, in Norwich with Claire. Even better. I remember almost dying of asphyxiation. You'd not be able to breathe as you were laughing, and just as you were calming down to be able to take a breath he'd get to another beat & have you pissing yourself again. It is literally the comedy experience of my life.
Last night was at the Lyric, Shaftbury Avenue (which dates to 1888, the year Saucy Jack was on the prowl), for Stripped avec me sis stellacutbill, Jez, Ali and pickettywitch (after the missus yesterdays_hat couldn't make it)
Not funny.
Sorry, but he wasn't. I laughed out loud maybe five times? I mean, it was okay, good Eddie stuff, like if he was on a chat show or summint -- but not good enough for standup. Bit too political in places, which while fine in itself, but just don't suit Eddie -- his surrealism is timeless, normally. This dates it.
All the usual 'err, um, yes' tics were there, but nothing rivalling the great creations of past shows. Jazz Chicken was as far as he got. The covered in bees callback was if anything just a reminder of what was missing... |
